5EAT is a five-speed automatic transmission for rear-wheel drive Subaru, since 2005 it has been installed on almost the entire main model range and is aggregated with engines of 2 to 3.5 liters.
RE5R05A is also a 5-speed automatic transmission for rear-wheel drive cars, but it is already installed on Infiniti and Nissan with engines from 2 to 6 liters.
These two automatic transmissions are united by an extremely similar design, so similar that many parts are interchangeable, as for the valve bodies - the hydraulic part is unified, the plungers are the same.
In this article, we will consider the repair of the valve body Subaru Outback 3.6, but remember that the principle of repair and consumables are also relevant for RE5R05A.
Vacuum test
We use a vacuum tester to identify damaged valves or channels inside the valve body. During the operation of the automatic transmission, either wear appears in the channel of the hydraulic plate, or the plunger itself is damaged, the oxide layer is erased. Vacuum testing allows you to determine the damaged pair of channel + plunger.
We start with the Main Pressure Regulator. In case of problems with this valve, the owner of a car with a 5EAT / RE5R05A box may face the following problems:
Overheating of the transmission
Slipping when shifting from second to third gear
Drive turns on with a delay
Jerk when shifting to R
Checking the Main Pressure valve. The vacuum values are close to critical, it must be changed.
Old plunger is pulled out
We are installing a new valve manufactured by Maktrans. The valve is made in a size that exceeds the standard size by 0.015 mm and is installed without using a reamer. At the same time we are replacing
booster valve Main Pressure.
We make sure that we have successfully restored the plunger to work Main Pressure Regulator.
Now checking two valve modulators A / B Pilot Valve.
These 2 valves are responsible for the operation of the solenoids, in case of problems with them, symptoms such as jerks, bumps, slippage during gear changes will emerge.
Modulatots are vacuumised
We change them to enlarged ones and get the following result.
Now we are testing the valve that is responsible for blocking the torque converter,, Torque Converter Clutch Control Valve. Problems with this valve, as well as the TC Regulator valve, can be determined using computer diagnostics, it will show the following errors:
- P0741
- P0744
Checking torque converter lock up valve
We remove the old valve. In the photo on the right you can see the problem with the booster, the wearout is in the form of a step, it is not diagnosed using a vacuum tester, but the core will wedge.
We install new valve and booster and repeat the vacuum test
In the same way, the remaining plungers are checked and, if necessary, replaced. The solenoids are checked at the stand and, if necessary, are replaced with new ones, since they do not belong to the repair. Such repairs cost about $ 200 (the exact amount is determined only after troubleshooting and may differ both in a smaller and a larger direction) and Maktrans gives a 1-year warranty with no mileage limitation for valve body repair.
